This is an antique Victorian gemstone and 21K yellow gold mourning locket measuring 1 3/8 inches long including the jump ring by 7/8 inch wide. Mourning lockets replaced mourning rings, date back centuries ago C. 1600's and were a less expensive way to mourn loved ones. Instead of costly commissioned painted portraits of family members saved for the rich, hair was incorporated in these locket style pendants that were eventually replaced once cameras were invented. Some may think these pieces to be morbid or strange, but the Victorian era was a period of sentimentality, and now people are drawn to mourning jewelry like they are drawn to mystery. The locket is prong set on back in two interlocking horseshoes with ten (10) round faceted emeralds totaling. 15CT and with ten (10) 1.5 MM to 2 MM seed pearls. The emeralds have natural surface inclusions which is common to the gem, and they have abrasions, and three have chips due to age. This is not overtly obvious and is mentioned for accuracy.
The locket has dents and cracks as shown in the pictures and is engraved Mabel, from E. Although not marked, the locket is thoroughly tested and 100% guaranteed 21K. It weighs 6.9 grams.
