Description: Offering a stunning and rare, Early Victorian Era, mourning or sentimental brooch. The piece features fourteen, clear, open-back, glass or crystal paste stones that surround an oval hair locket. The locket contains a memento of brown and blond hair within a compartment and sealed in with a glass, crystal cover with beveled edges. (Please note this is not the type of locket that you can easily open as it is sealed). The back of the brooch does not have an inscription which leaves us wondering if the piece is a mourning piece or sentimental piece for two people children, a couple, etc.

There are no markings but the piece was tested using a non-invasive method and the results are as follows: The sides of the settings for the stones appear to be yellow gold with a rosy patina and they test at 10K but just barely so likely a low-karat gold or heavy gold-filled. The c catch clasp and brooch casing are yellow gold in color. The c catch presented the same test results. I could not safely test the back of the brooch casing but it appears to be the same as the c catch and stone settings.

It also appears that at some point, someone scratched the back to make sure it was not gold plated as one can see the. Dated by a jewelry historian to c. Very unique piece with paste and hair work from this time. The ring box pictured is for display only.

Approximate Measurements: Just under 1 1/2 inches (or 36 mm) by 1 1/8 inches (or 29 mm). Has a depth of roughly 7 mm. Condition: Good condition with wear in keeping with age and use. Outside of settings have some tarnish or dark residue. When looking closely one may see some dust or dirt inside the locket.

Slightly scratched area on back as mentioned above. Please use the photos as a guide as they form part of the description and the condition of a piece is subjective. Any boxes or props pictured are for display only unless otherwise noted and are not included with this listing.

But you must contact the store BEFORE you pay to arrange this. While the condition of each item is described in the listing, there may be other condition issues not listed, so use the pictures as a guide as they are part of the listing description.
