This is an antique Georgian ring with a small hand painted portrait miniature of a lady under glass or rock crystal. The ring is French solid silver and gold, it is stamped with a boars head on the back of the mount, and the shank is gold but not hallmarked. I believe if the gold was tested it would test as real gold. The main mount is an oval in shape and solid backed, and the small portrait miniature is painted in mute grey tones on a black background. The outer edge of the ring mount is scallop shaped with marcasite stones. The gold shoulders are an openwork scroll design leading to a slightly grooved shank. It is a UK size L.
1/2, and a US size approx 6. Possibly a mourning ring but there is no hair or inscription. In overall nice condition but with a couple of areas of damage to mention, the glass / rock crystal is not in good condition at all, it is very scuffed and there is an impact mark in the bottom left of the glass which has unfortunately discoloured that area slightly.
Also a lot of the marcasite stones are broken (see pictures). Otherwise all fine, just normal age and use wear to the silver and gold. A very pretty ring actually even though it has a number of issues..... It has done well to survive till now.
I wonder what it has been thru. Please see pictures for more details. 18.1mm x 12.5mm on the front panel. My measurements are done with an electronic digital caliper and small weighing scales where appropriate.
