Rare Georgian Memento Mori Skull Mourning Brooch
For sale is a rare Georgian period memento mori skull mourning brooch, with a full inscription to Hannah Shearman Ob, Sept, 1819. Inset with period miniature white enamel skull, most likely painted on wafer. The brooch has no hallmarks, which is not uncommon for the era, and fully tests as gold. Crystal is also in good condition for its age. Brooch measures a little under 3/4 long. A nice velvet lined box will also be included with the brooch, (Not Shown) which is a lot nicer than the one shown. The brooch is still in lovely original antique condition. Very rarely do fine Georgian pieces like this little gem come up for sale. Memento mori jewellery was once a very popular symbol to represent death in centuries past, and a very common symbol during times of grieving, though we might see this practice as a little morbid, and macabre today. In all a very beautiful and rare Georgian mourning brooch. I recently did some research into the late (Hannah Shearman), and her register shows she was possibly once the wife of a (James Shearman)? I also located Hannah's grave headstone on the net, and she passed away on (September 1819) aged (68) in (Berechurch Colchester) England. So this brooch can be tied directly to the late (Hannah Shearman) of Berechurch Colchester, England. So this brooch would without doubt have been made for the same Hannah Shearman who died 1819 aged (68). So this particular piece of mourning jewellery comes with a wonderful provenance!!! I've seen many Georgian memento mori rings before, but antique Georgian memento mori skull brooches are just super rare, and its great to see this one has a nice inscription as well. If you know your antiques, then you will know just how rare this brooch is. To find another like this would be near impossible, as they rarely surface.
