An incredibly rare double mourning brooch from the late Georgian period. In solid 9 carat gold and with a superb deep rounded body, it's decorated with a halo of lustrous seed pearls with millegrain edging, around a fabulously cross-hatched enamelled gold rope.

This in turn surrounds further black and white vitreous enamelling encircling a pair of absolutely tiny rounded, glazed locket compartments - containing two different hair mementoes with gold ropework borders. To the back is a hand engraved dedication to two people, with opposing lettering, a feature I have never seen before. They read:'Sir JH Ob.

1815 Æt 85', and'AH Ob. These refer to one Sir John Henslow and his wife Ann. John was a master boatbuilder in the Royal Dockyard at Woolwich, London and later to become Chief Surveyor and to design a huge number of boats for the Royal Navy at a time when British Sea Power was expanding.

John and Ann were grandparents to John Stevens Henslow, mentor of Charles Darwin. It measures 29 x 19 mm, weighs 6.6 grams and is in near perfect, practically unused condition with no wear, loss or damage. What's more, I offer layaway deals so there's no need to let any of my listings slip through your fingers - just ask!
