Very old Victorian possibly Georgian hair locket mourning ring with large rectangular face set with 10 cabochon turquoise beads or stones surrounding a center frame holding a small beveled glass pane with braided hair behind. The shoulders are beautifully decorated with swirling details. The ring face tests at 10k and the shank at 14k.
Very old Antique piece from the Victorian to Georgian era that I acquired on the east coast. The large ring face makes it quite dramatic and eye catching to wear. You can tell it has quite a lot of age to it so it gives a very antique look when worn.
Ring is about a size 7 1/4 to 7 1/2 in my estimating of how it fits compared to other rings. The back of the ring is closed back and domed with the shank slightly oval so it does not fit snugly on my ring sizer mandrel.
The opening inside of the shank is 20mm by 16.5mm. The ring face is large, 18.5mm by 15.5mm. Please note that all my pieces are in estate condition. This very old piece does look its age. The glass pane is somewhat pressed in sitting at a slight angle in the frame.
There are lighter cloudy spots behind the glass pane probably from the ring having gotten wet. I would think a jeweler could remove the frame to clear out the interior but I don't have the goldsmith knowledge to know exactly what that might involve. The turquoise stones or beads are securely held in sturdy bezels but there are three stones with some cracks. One of the three just has two hairlines seen under magnification, the other has several hairlines and the 3rd one has deeper cracks with nicks of loss to the surface and some discoloration. The back inside of the closed back ring has dark solder material all over it. This is not visible when wearing it but it must have worn thin from age and was fortified? It almost looks like the frame on the face might be removable but it didn't come free easily and I would not attempt to take it apart for fear of ruining it but I would imagine a trusted goldsmith could clean the piece up significantly. But of course due to age - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. I would be delighted if you'd follow me.
